Frequently Asked Questions

Because your health insurance is vitally important, if the insurance agencies you are considering do not know the answers to these and other basic questions relative to this niche insurance market, you may need Kent Hoyle.

What is the difference between "Medigap" policy and a "Medicare Supplement Insurance" policy?
What is the difference between "Medigap" policy and a "Medicare Supplement Insurance" policy?

Medigap and Medicare Supplement Insurance policies are the same. A Medigap policy is a health insurance policy sold by private insurance companies to fill gaps in the original Medicare coverage. Medigap policies can help pay your share of the costs of Medicare covered services such as the coinsurance, copays, and deductibles.

This, as well as many Medicare insurance topics, are covered in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services booklet, “Choosing a Medigap Policy.” This is one of the documents I will give you when I take your application or anytime upon request.

What is the difference between an Agent and a Broker?

An insurance agent is a person that usually has a contractual relationship with only one company relating to a specific line of insurance, whereas a broker will probably have numerous companies available for the consumer to choose from, depending upon the many variables presented. An important example: Missouri is a guaranteed issue state. If the company you are insured with takes a major rate increase, at your request, your broker could help you acquire coverage with another lower premium company.

What is Meant by Part A and Part B?

Medicare Part A is referring to eligible inpatient hospital coverages and skilled nursing facility care.

Whereas, Part B is referencing eligible physicians’ services, hospital outpatient care, physical and speech therapy and ambulance services.

Will my Medicare Supplement Policy be Guaranteed Renewable?

The Medicare Supplement Policy vs. the Medicare Advantages Policies:

  • The Medicare Supplement Policies CAN NOT be cancelled by the companies unless there has been material misrepresentation on the application.
  • Whereas, All Medicare Advantage Policies CAN be terminated by an insurance company if they decide to discontinue offering that Medicare Advantage Plan.
What do you need to know if you want to buy a
Medicare Supplement policy?

All Medicare Supplement policies are standardized. This means, policies with the same letter offer the same basic benefits no matter where you live or which insurance company you buy from.

You can only buy a Medicare Supplement policy if you have Original Medicare. Generally, that means you have to sign up for Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance) before you can buy a Medicare Supplement policy.

You will pay the private insurance company a monthly premium for your Medicare Supplement policy in addition to the monthly Part B premium you pay to Medicare.

Any new Medicare Supplement policy issued since 1992 is guaranteed renewable even if you have health problems. This means the insurance company can’t cancel your Medicare Supplement policy as long as you stay enrolled and pay the premium.

The best time to buy a Medicare Supplement policy is during your Open Enrollment Period. This 6-month period begins the first month you have Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) AND you’re 65 or older.

You can use any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, anywhere in the U.S.

Medicare Supplement plans sold after 2005 don’t include prescription drug coverage. If you want prescription drug coverage, you can join a separate Medicare drug plan (Part D). Please Consider the Following:

In my opinion, if you are currently insured with or considering insuring with a company or agency that displays the following characteristics, YOU CAN DO BETTER:

  • You call an 800 phone number and you are placed on hold for an extended period of time.
  • Your insurance person is an agent, not a broker. If the company substantially increases your premium, the agent, more than likely, will not be able to personally help you; however, the broker will have other companies available.
  • You can only meet with your insurance professional during their convenient business hours.
  • You only have the office phone number.

All of my insureds have my personal cell phone number and they understand that I do not keep typical business hours. All of my insureds are informed to call me whenever they need me, not only during business hours. I’m here to help you navigate through the Medicare maze with ease. Choosing the Right Insurance Company and Policy

Kent Hoyle Insurance Agency is a consumer advocate agency. Being a broker means I am contracted with numerous companies at all times. I am always looking for the following:

  1. Companies that can provide the greater depth and breadth of coverage available in their niche market.
  2. Being consumers, we want the most affordable premiums.
  3. I only desire to deal with companies that will provide good service after the application is written. Some companies truly just don’t deserve the business.

Analyzing Insurance Companies for the Best Service

Because company analysis is an ongoing process in my agency, specific company names are not listed. Some are coming in the front door periodically, if they show promise. Other companies are being ushered out the back door if, in my opinion, they fail to continue to meet our above criteria. If you are interested in knowing the companies that we work with, please call me at 417-438-6727.
